Until approximately a hundred years ago in the West, people only had recourse to renewable energy for heat and light for their homes. They burnt wood and sometimes coal or peat (OK, fossil fuels) and got up when the sun came up and went to bed with the sun as well. In, fact a large part of the world’s population still lives like that.

Things altered with mechanized industry and night shifts. Electricity providers sold the populace on being able to do more instead of just sleeping when it got dark, and the Western population got hooked on buying huge amounts of energy, mostly electricity and engine fuel, which was usually produced from oil and coal.

This idea soon travelled around the world and with rising affluence came emulation and other countries wanted the same. Now we are in the sad predicament where we have to admit that we rode the fossil fuel gravy train to its last stop without thinking about what we would utilize when fossil fuels ran out.

This is where the typical civilian comes in. You have to think about how you want to draw energy in the future. Do you want to be powered by keeping sucking unrenewable resources out of the Earth, or do you want to have as little to do with it as you can? Would you prefer to have everything you have now, but know that the resources that are powering your lifestyle are renewable?

If, like millions of others around the world, you would rather say ‘No!’ to traditional power production methods, then you have to take a stand. But not only in words, you really have to do some something about it physically.

This will mean investing a lot of money up front, which might not be a problem for you or you may even think that taking a stand is worth looking for a bank loan. These are admirable sentiments, but I would like to propose that there is another way to self-sufficiency.

You could make your own!

Why not? The technology has been around for decades and is fairly easy. Most reasonably competent teenagers can put together a bank of photovoltaic cells into a solar panel and then plug that into your home’s electrical system. And if a teenager can manage it, so can you. All you (and the teenager) will require is a solar panel kit and a schematical diagram. A plan in other words.

A solar panel kit can be bought locally from a DIY shop or from the Internet. A typical solar panel will take a few hours to assemble and will produce 100 watts of electrical energy. The electricity produced from these panels is then passed through an inverter that changes the current from DC to AC, making it usable by household appliances and the utility grid.

Do yourself and the planet a favour, get off the grid and start saving money and the planet’s resources, you will be surprised how easy it is once you get going. And do not forget, you can do it in stages of, say, one 100 watt panel a month until you hit self-sufficiency. It is not a question of ‘All or Nothing’.

Anyone who has to pay the gas and electric bills for their family every month knows why we should all conserve energy. The price of electricity especially just creeps up and up. Unfortunately you can’t buy it somewhere else, at least not without a significant investment, so the best answer is to figure out how to get by with less. If you haven’t already started turning off lights and appliances when you’re not using them, you’re a step behind already.

Money isn’t the only reason to conserve. The effects of energy production on our environment must be slowed down significantly. We need to find clean ways of producing energy, like solar and wind, but that’s not enough. We also need to use the energy we have much more wisely. That’s the only way to save money and control pollution in the long run.

Energy conservation is beneficial for all of us in many different ways, but one of the most tangible is financial. We should all be aware of the cost savings we can effect by conserving energy both at home and at work. Obviously if you use less electricity, your electric bill will be lower, but did you know that most power companies charge on a sliding scale? Your last kilowatt is more expensive than your first. This means that if you reduce your electricity consumption by 10% you’ll save more than 10% on your bill. Though this is more direct, there are some indirect reasons, which of course if not checked soon might lead to severe problems in the future.

Some scientists have predicted that we will run out of oil in the next 60 years if we keep going at our current rate of consumption. As fuel sources get scarcer and scarcer, prices can only rise. These very same finite energy sources have another major drawback. Processing them from their natural form into fuel that we can use releases harmful compounds into the environment.

Whether we consider the community as a whole or just one individual, the benefits of conserving energy far outweigh the inconvenience. However small an effort you make in conserving energy, it usually counts in the end, the more reason why you should not relent in the struggle to bring down your energy bills.

There have been major technological advances in renewable energy to the extent that countries have made it their special energy policies countrywide. Wind turbine is a good example. Some consumers and businesses have been able to use wind turbine energy to produce their own power. Even better, power companies have installed large numbers of wind turbines to produce the electricity they sell to consumers. Their photovoltaic counterparts are also making recognizable efforts with their solar panel conversion.

It isn’t easy to change our ways. It takes time, effort, a lot of money and a willingness to alter our behavior. Fortunately many people are starting to realize that it’s worth it to protect the environment and ensure that a system is in place for the next generation.

There will always be people who don’t think it’s worth the effort to conserve energy, but don’t let them stop you from doing it. It’s well worth the effort for the environment and for future generations who won’t have energy at all unless we make some changes. The other reason as to why there should be combined efforts is that there is also a need to try and contain the market prices of fuel before they spiral out of control in the near future.

Driving an electric or hybrid car benefits for not only the environment but also leaves you with more money in your pocket since at present electricity is far cheaper than petroleum. Buying an electric or hybrid car is a good alternative to buying an internal combustion vehicle since they are both more efficient and cheaper to operate.

There is no shortage of critics who say that running an electric car is pointless unless the energy to drive it comes from a renewable source such as wind or solar power. It is true that using renewable energy would be a better solution, though even if the mains electricity comes from coal fired power stations it is more efficient to run an electric car than a petroleum driven one.

Why is this the case?

There are two main reasons. First is that electric and hybrid vehicles are far more efficient than internal combustion driven cars. The second is that power from the mains grid itself is more efficient than power from burning petroleum, even if that mains power is generated by burning coal. Let’s look at these two points in more detail.

Both electric and hybrid cars use powerful electric motors to turn the drive wheels. These motors run using magnets and as such do not require contact between the wheel and any type of drive shaft. This immediately removes the element of friction from the components of such a drive train. Also, when the vehicle brakes the magnetic fields are reversed and energy from the forward motion of the car is converted back into electrical energy which recharges the battery. The name for this process is regenerative braking and it is standard on electric and hybrid vehicles. Petroleum driven cars are the opposite of this. They use friction both to drive the car and to stop it. The engine has a flywheel that drives a drive shaft, and this shaft turns the wheels. At each contact there is a loss of energy from friction. Then when the vehicle brakes, the forward motion of the car is converted to heat through the brake pads and so the energy is lost.

The second point is the efficiency of the mains power grid. Power stations are designed to be as efficient as possible. Even though the majority of these are still using fossil fuels, they achieve conversion rates as high as 50% of the energy in the fuel to electricity. By comparison, the standard internal combustion engine has an efficiency in the region of 25%. So it is fair to conclude that a vehicle run on electricity from the mains is about twice as efficient and therefore half as polluting as a petroleum driven car.

The last point about the efficiency of the grid becomes more pronounced if the electricity is sourced from a renewable supply. In that case an electric car running off the grid becomes extremely efficient. While running efficient public transport in such a manner would be even more efficient, it seems that cars are here to stay so it makes sense for them to be as energy efficient as possible.

While criticizing advances in energy efficiency is easy, we need to keep in mind that any move in the right direction is a step forward. Running an electric or hybrid car is more environmentally and economically advantageous, regardless of whether the energy to do so comes from a renewable source or not.

For most of us owning a car is not just desirable, but necessary. Due to a general lack of effective public transport, we are forced to rely on private transport. It would be best if this private transport could be as environmentally friendly as possible. So we ask ourselves, is it possible to run a car on solar energy?

There is an incredible amount of energy from the sun falling on the surface of the earth each day. That energy could easily power all human industry and other activity many times over. Much of this energy is reflected from the surface back into space as light. More energy is radiated back into space as heat, which is also called infra-red energy.

The advantage of solar power is that it converts sunlight that is already falling on the surface of the earth into electricity. That sunlight would generally have either been absorbed by the surface or things on the surface such as plants, or reflected back into space. This electricity can then be used elsewhere. When the electricity is used, the energy in it is then released as heat again. So the overall effect of a solar panel is basically just to transfer heat from one place to another.

This is a very positive situation when we compare it to burning fossil fuels for energy. The heat released from burning fossil fuels s additional to what would otherwise be in the atmosphere. This then results in an overall increase in the energy content of the atmosphere, which is a central issue for scientists and politicians concerned about possible changes to the Earth’s climate.

This makes it clear that being able to use sunlight to power our vehicles is a desirable option. But is this a realistic option? The fact is that this is already being done. Owners of electric cars are using mains supply electricity rather than petroleum to charge the batteries which power their vehicles. All that needs to be added to this scenario is to obtain the electricity from a renewable source such as a domestic solar installation or a solar power plant and one can effectively be driving on sunshine.

Have a look at the recent models of electric cars at Roger Vanderlely’s website www.green-planet-solar-energy.com.

My interest in renewable energy stems from the fact that I am planning to build a house from scratch in the very near future. As a new construction it will give me a clean slate to work with. I would like to incorporate as much renewable energy technology as I can in this house. In fact I want to have an off the grid house.

As I will be building the house from scratch I will be able to incorporate the full spectrum of renewable energy in the design of the house from the low-tech to the high-tech.

Passive energy is a “low-tech” approach. When constructing or remodeling a house, a bit of advance planning will yield a considerable amount of possibilities to use solar energy to both heat of cool your home.

The running costs of a building can be reduced if the reliance on mechanical or electrical heating, cooling and lighting can be reduced.

Passive solar energy cannot be tacked on to a building. Passive solar energy is not an addition to a house that can be added later or at the end of the building process. It is therefore essential to consider the possibilities for passive solar energy right from the start of the building process i.e. at the planning stages.

Passive solar energy system must be incorporated into and form an integral part of an energy efficient building and landscape.

The field of passive solar energy involves building design and the placement of appropriate building components to make the best use of sunlight for day lighting, passive heating and/or passive cooling. Besides saving energy, a primary benefit of passive solar is improved comfort for the occupants.

Passive solar energy is a resource that does not require machinery. If properly designed, buildings can use daylight year-round to capture the sun’s heat in the winter and minimize it in the summer. Buildings designed in such a way utilize passive solar energy to help heat, cool, or light them.

Your energy requirements can be reduced considerably through the use of passive solar design, better insulation and energy efficient appliances. The amount of energy saved will naturally vary on the architectural design of the house, the landscaping surrounding it, and the efficiency of the appliances including the illumination.

Many passive solar heating design features also provide day lighting. The use of natural sunlight to light up or brighten a building’s interior is known as day lighting. An open floor plan allows the light to reach throughout the building. This can result in substantial savings on electric bills, and not only provides a higher quality of light, but improves productivity and health. Combining natural day lighting with natural ventilation strategies can considerably reduce energy consumption, making a significant contribution to a sustainable building design.

The most common building component used in passive solar energy is the windows. Over a year, most windows loose more energy than they gain. Advanced windows systems can actually be net energy suppliers, with better net annual energy performance than the most tightly insulated wall.

Advanced windows systems use a combination of double or triple glazings, low-emissive coatings, argon or krypton gas fill, and transparent insulation. Choosing an advanced window system and placing most of them to face southwards can reduce your annual heating load considerably. Studies have shown that houses designed using such passive solar concepts can require less than half the heating energy of the same house using conventional windows with random window orientation.

In winter, when the external temperature cools down in the evening, the thermal mass will radiate that absorbed heat into the rooms. Proper design and selection of shading devices can also result in reduced cooling loads in the summer. Apart from shading devices a passive solar cooling device such as the thermal chimney can be used to help cool down a house. It is of a similar design to that of a smoke chimney but instead of smoke it vents hot air out of the house through the roof.

Another approach for getting more solar energy into your home is to build small additions, sometimes referred to as sun rooms, which are designed to maximize solar intake. If the ventilation for these additions is properly designed the incoming energy not only provide heat to the sun room itself, but can be extended via convection or forced air systems to help heat the rest of your home.

A significant challenge for the next generation of modern dwellings is the integration of advanced window technologies, superior day lighting and passive solar heating for buildings in cold climates. New technology developments, in particular with advanced windows and airtight envelopes, make many older passive solar “rules-of-thumb” obsolete, and require the use of energy performance analysis tools.

The use of environmental modelling, a new and invaluable design tool that provides a detailed computer analysis of the internal environment with predictions of temperature, airflow, CO2 concentrations and daylight levels will help in designing more energy efficient houses.

With a bit of planning, passive solar energy design can reduce your energy requirements which also reduces the amount of energy your micro-solar and wind power plant has to produce.

Solar panels without a doubt produce electricity. But how much they produce depends on several key factors.

Solar panels without a doubt produce electricity. But how much they produce depends on several key factors.

First and probably the most important factor is how much sun your region gets. If you live in a hot, dry, desert region or at a high altitude, you have an advantage. For people living in other areas, be aware that the more sunny days you have and the brighter the sun is when it shines, the better.

For solar panels to harvest enough sunlight to produce more than a little electricity, what’s required is full, bright, shadow-free sunlight. Without it, your panels will not generate as much power. So if your area tends to be cloudy, be aware that not as much power will be harvested at certain times.

The major problem facing homeowners with solar panels is shadow. That is just what it sounds like. When your panel or even part of your panel is shaded, the voltage output becomes lower. And even a small bit of shade can affect output quite dramatically.

There will be times of the day when shadows are inevitable, like early or late in the day. When the sun is at an extreme angle, little power is being generated anyway so this is not a concern. But it’s important to avoid shade during the prime hours usually between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This is when the sun is overhead.

Panels should be installed on mounts that are angled toward the sun. By doing that you can ensure that you are getting the most production from the modules. If possible make an adjustment to the angle of your mounting rack on a seasonal basis. That’s because the sun’s position is different in summer than it is in winter.

Lastly, you will need to properly maintain your solar panels. Don’t worry though because it’s a breeze. Because panels don’t have moving parts the only maintenance you need to do is to keep them clean.

Rain will do the job for you if it falls regularly and for a few hours at a time. But if not, simply hose the panels off to keep dirt from building up. Be sure to only hose them off in morning or evening when the panels are not as hot as they would be during midday hours, to avoid problems.

Watch this important video to see just how easy it is build your own solar panels and eliminate your power bill. Go to http://www.goinggreensavinggreen.com now and start saving now.

Water efficiency is important to conserve resources and save money. The average home has many areas to improve on in terms of efficiency, and some of the fixes will require no money at all to get started. As long as you have some time to devote to the project, water efficiency problems are easy to solve.

The most efficient households in the United States are likely to have wells. A water well is deep and can support a family, long term, with little maintenance. The biggest consideration is the fact that they can be costly to install, and that families absolutely have to remember to regularly test the well water. All of that being said, well water is quite tasty in comparison to most city water supplies, and is helpful in deterring high water bills.

Showering habits would demand that families know how to get in and out of the bathroom in an acceptable amount of time. If family members do so, they can save much more water than what would have been used with a bath. Baths are the holy grail in female bathing habits, but the truth is that they just aren’t efficient in accomplishing a good clean with little water.

Even a simple toilet leak can amount to 5 percent or more of your water bill. If you notice any sounds in your pipes that appear to be a trickle of water, it’s time to investigate the problem immediately. In addition, a water leak can contribute to serious harm of your home’s infrastructure by causing mold and damaging wood.

Washing machines are the best area to improve on if you have a dated model. A washing machine even from ten years ago, while cheap to buy, will cost you more money in water usage than what a newer machine does. Newer washing machines also do a better job at washing clothes, use less water, and are lighter. Spend the extra money now to save more money in the future of your home ownership.

Watering flowers, the lawn, and produce bearing plants is hard to conserve water on, since limiting water would also harm the mentioned plants. A better action would be to put buckets under your gutters to collect rain water. This allows you to save the water for watering plants days or even a weeks at a time. It’s a great Summer trick of conserving water for your house plants.

In Conclusion

Staying efficient in water usage takes some planning. There are plenty of other ways to keep things green- just look around and see what other green pundits are doing. You’ll be glad to save money, as well as save your local environment.

When we think of solar power and our homes we imagine a fancy array of blue panels perched neatly on the roof paying off our electricity bill. However solar electricity is not the only type of solar energy you can get working on your home.

While those panels can cost an arm and a leg without extensive government rebates, an equally important path to saving money is to install a solar hot water heater.

The benefits of such an installation are many. The most noticeable and immediate effect will be a significant reduction in your energy bill. Regardless of whether your current water heater uses gas, oil or electricity, getting a solar unit installed will slash the amount of energy needed to provide you with hot water.

Less immediate benefits include having a more positive impact on the environment by harnessing a renewable energy source, and making your home more valuable. Solar water heaters work effectively in virtually any climate and latitude. It is very likely that you will be able to get a grant or rebate on the cost of the unit and installation, which should make it very affordable. There are plenty of reasons to go solar for hot water and none against it.

There are a range of different unit types available, and you’ll need to determine which is the most suitable for your home and budget. Active systems pump water through the panels and may be able to use your existing tank. Passive systems rely on the fact that cold water is denser than hot water, so they do not need a pump. They do need the tank to be mounted above the panels, which may not always be possible.

If you live in a frost prone area you’ll need to go for a system that uses some type of anti-freeze in the collector tubes. These systems require a heat exchange unit as well so they may cost a little more.

Be prepared to shop around to get the best deal. Most installers are willing to come to your home to give you an accurate quote and will also let you know what system is best for you. By getting several such quotes you will be able to determine what you should be paying and what system you want. The more quotes you get the better a deal you will end up with.

Not only gas prices are soaring nowadays; electricity bills are, too. In some countries, a lot of people have started utilizing electricity sources that bring about more savings. The most common are the so called solar panels, which are able to make use of solar power to produce electricity. Electricity that comes out of solar panels is more popularly known as residential solar energy that can help you save on electricity bills. How the said type of energy is produced is something that needs to be answered.

Panels that bring about solar power actually work in a simple manner: their job is to ensure that the sun’s light is transformed into usable energy that will give their users the electricity they need. This is done through silicon atoms that bond with each other in order to facilitate electron-sharing and therefore help in giving off electricity.

Part of the process of producing electricity through panels that produce solar power is combining silicon atoms with the photons that are produced by the sunlight. Once silicon atoms, their electrons, and the photons are mixed together, electricity is generated. Take note however that for a big amount of electricity to be produced, a lot of solar energy is also needed, which equates to the fact that more solar cells are also needed.

Some people may think that solar power producing panels may be hard to obtain, let alone placed in their homes. The truth, however, is that there are now various manufacturers that offer solar panel kits that come with easy installation and are definitely easy to use. The said kits also come with tools, better known as inverters that enable the production of power for home use.

If you have the desire to purchase solar panel kits, keep in mind that to get maximum benefits and to ensure that the output works properly, have those kits installed by the experts. Though it may be true that those kits are extremely easy to install, there are still some factors that may affect the performance of your finished product such as the roof angle of your residence, the directions the solar panel’s trackers face, and many more.

Finding out everything about how solar energy may be produced and how solar panels may be utilized are usually some ways of motivating people to consider the use of solar power in their homes, offices, shops, etc. Electricity produced from panels that emit usable energy may also be used in street lights, lighthouses, and even in traffic signs. Through the use of solar power, the process of energy conservation is practiced. Take note too that the electricity a user gets from solar panels may be described as reliable and very simple to maintain.

In our world that is bombarded with the rising prices of utilities, specifically high electricity bills, the only way to save a significant amount of money is to look for other sources of energy. Residential solar energy has a lot of benefits that we can enjoy for as long as we learn the right ways to obtain it.

Solar panel employment has long been established as an approach to provide an alternative energy resource and finally free all of us from our dependence on fossil fuels. Big market sectors have spent in the enhancement plus research of this new technology, and advocacy meant for cleaner energy resources plus cheaper commercialized solar panels creation has brought this technology to house holds as well as small-scale sectors.

European countries just like Germany, Denmark plus Norway headed the integration of solar panel devices in to the making of households and buildings. Solar cell homes have grown to be a major development in eco-friendly household areas in these countries. A major instance is the very first eco-friendly place on the planet in Friedrich, Germany, in which 5000 people make use of solar cell homes, especially designed to increase sun radiation on the roofs.

The solar panels or even arrays are integrated into the rooftops to utilize the sun’s energy and supply eco-friendly remedies. Some other major countries as well are starting to participate in the advocacy for solar panel utilization. Mumbai, India is among such places to participate in the most up-to-date trend.

Moreover, since the technology of solar energy usage is rising and promising, increasingly more commercial establishments are starting to invest in this brand new technology. Due to the quick growth of the technology, households are even starting to invest in the long term features about solar panels. Solar cell homes turned out to be the revolutionary standard in eco-friendly building integration and construction.

Solar cell homes are just the beginning of the continuing as well as quick development of this emerging and eco-friendly advocacy to protect the environment from further devastation. Even though at present, solar panel installations are costly, it’s a little effort considering the harm we’ve currently caused upon the environment.

Moreover, considering the future results of alternative energy, the results are better in comparison to fossil fuel burning. Let us halt searching the environment for little packets fossil fuels and initiate looking up to the heavens. As long as there is the Earth plus the Sun, solar energy shall be incalculable.
