utility bill last month went from $33/34 to 83. I have been unplugging everything when not using. I did nothing different from the previous month. I had the meter person come out to reread the meter
and the figures were pretty close to what it said on the bill. I pointed out the disk that spins around showing the usage(the more electricity you use the faster the disk spins) was spinning over 50% faster and I had unplugged everything except the refrigerator and tv(I couldn’t reach the outlet) The disk had been spinning 50% slower when I had everything plugged in and turned on. My brother and I can’t figure out what is going on. The meter guy said that if there was something wrong with the meter that the disk would be spinning slower not faster. I have not used anything new. My new utility bill says I have used (was 695 elec watts last statement and this statement says 808) Since I got last bill I cut back even more. I unplugged everything electrical except the refrigerator and tv. And no I am not watching more tv than last month. My refrigerator is an energy star Appliance 3 years old. The electrical portion should have come down not go up! Anyone know of what is going on?

Mine was made in 1992. I can’t find it on the energy star web site, though. Just say your average refrigerator from 1992 vs. an average new one today, how much could I save in a year?

What have you done to become a better steward to the Earth. Be honest only things you have actually done counts. Thing you plan to do don’t. I not going to come by to check but your friends will know if you lied.

In the last 5 years I have done:
1: Bought a new vehicle that double the milage of the old one.
a turbo diesel that is cleaner than it’s gas powered brother
2: Reinsulated the house reducing my energy consumption
3: Replaced all My 30 year old windows and doors with lowE2 replacements. Reducing my energy consumption
4: Replaced kitchen appliances with new energy star models Refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave.
5: Replaced clothes washer with new low water energy star model (full discloser the old one broke and had to be replaced)
6: Replaced all bathroom fixtures with low flow fixtures to save water In two bathrooms
7: Changed my driving habits from close to 1000,000/mpy to15,000/mpy DISCLOSER ( I changed jobs )but they were on my personal vehicles.
William thank for being honest. Yes I did recycle every thing I could but every thing that couldn’t did go to the landfill about 2 1/2 pickup loads.

I have a Whirlpool energy star refrigerator (side-by-side) it’s only a couple of years old and has worked perfectly. I don’t know if I just never noticed it before, or if it’s a new possible “issue” but the middle of the fridge (where the soft plastic part of the door rests on) is HOT!!
I mean, my elbow touched it today and I literally jumped back! Is normal for that part (the 1-2 inch section between the freezer & fridge) to heat up like this??

Thanks for your help! :)

I have a new Maytag refrigerator (not Energy Star) that is making a high pitched whine or ringing sound when it’s running. I researched this a bit and have read that it usually is caused by the new high speed, energy efficient compressors and is considered normal. That may be but it gives me headaches! I had Maytag out to inspect it and they offered to replace the compressor and drier but said it appears the refrigerator is operating normally and this surgery may not make the shrill noise go away? Is there anything I can do? Maybe carpet under the unit? Thanks.
Forgot to add that I did have Home Depot replace the original refrigerator with an new, identical one. The new (and current) one makes the same noise. That’s why I belive it when Maytag says it’s normal. I’m concerned that having them replace the compressor & drier will be a big waste of time as they will probably put in the exact same part with the same characteristics.

The windows are single pain, old and leaky; the appliances are from the 1960′s and 1970′s ie refrigerator, hot water heater, dryer and washer and the Air conditioners are from the 1970′s and early 1980′s. Our family liked to fix things so everything needs to be replaced with better energy star technology.

So… where should we start? Which improvement would give us the biggest Bang for the Buck? Thanks for your suggestions.
