Low Energy lighting is becoming ever more popular. Current UK Building Regulations demand that approximately 30% of lighting in new developments is now dedicated low energy, and in existing housing stock the use of high wattage standard incandescent lamps is being phased out. But, amidst mounting pressure from the government to move from standard light bulbs to energy saving alternatives, very few householders seem to understand how low energy lighting differs from conventional lighting systems? The key to understanding the difference lies in knowing how conventional light bulbs work.

The correct term for the type of conventional light bulb that we all recognise is a tungsten, or incandescent bulb. They use a tiny filament made of tungsten, which when heated gives off a bright light. However, the problem with these bulbs is that they are not energy efficient, as a lot of energy is required to heat the filament to the level required to give off the light. Tungsten bulbs come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, with a number of different caps. The standard life of a tungsten lamp is around one thousand hours. The most common wattage is 60 Watts.

Another existing style of bulb is the halogen. Halogen lamps have very small filaments filled with halogen gas. They run at extremely high temperatures. They are most suited to small, bright or decorative fittings. Halogen lamps are generally slightly more efficient than tungsten bulbs, and the standard life of a halogen bulb is around twice as long at an average of two thousand hours. Halogen bulbs can be spit into two types – those that run off of 240v mains voltage, and low (12v) voltage. The term low voltage should not be confused with low energy. Low voltage lamps require a transformer to reduce the voltage. Halogen lamps do get very hot and they should never be handled until they have cooled fully.

Low energy lamps are also known as fluorescent lamps. The fluorescent lamp is actually a low-pressure gas discharge which is held in a cylindrical shaped tube. This tube is covered with a phosphor coating. As the gas discharges, it produces ultra-violet radiation that is converted into visible light by the phosphor coating. Early fluorescent lamps suffered from a flickering effect and indeed a buzzing noise that was produced, but advances in technology have all but eliminated these problems by using high-frequency electronic ballasts. Low energy lamps can last up to 8000 hours, and offer major savings in energy consumption.

Broadly speaking, one Watt of a low energy lamp is equivalent to 5 Watts in a standard tungsten incandescent. Therefore a low energy lamp rated at 15W is equivalent to a 75W traditional bulb. Early low energy fittings had a reputation for taking some time to reach their full brightness from switching on, but this lag has now been reduced to a couple of seconds. One drawback with low energy fittings that remains however is that very few lamps work with dimmer switches.

Another factor that should be considered is that any broken low energy lamps should be double wrapped in plastic bags and carefully disposed of, as they do contain very small amounts of mercury (which is not at all dangerous when contained within the bulb). The bulbs should be disposed of responsibly and can either be collected in a normal household waste bin or can be recycled at the local council’s Household Waste and Recycling Centre or at collection points provided by some light bulb retailers.

I bought a Hilti dg150 on Ebay and did not realize that it was a 220v tool. This tool was a great deal and is a necesity for my company. How do I get this tool to work in an american outlet? Is there a way that I can splice it and do an adapter or something of that sort? I also need the tool to have close to the full amount of power that it is built for also. Please any electricians HELP!!! I have a few jobs next week that this tool will take a day or two out of the whole process. Thanks in advance.
It might even be american, I do need it to be portable, because I work in new construction homes. All the outlets I use do provide plenty of power – enough to power a tool that is twice the power of this one. This one is a 220v rated at up to 2000w. I just need it to be able to be plugged into a normal american outlet though, and work correctly.
I figured I needed a transformer and found one with a switch for half and full power like stated. And yes I do use tools with twice the power rating of this tool in the outlets that our electric company has for contractors – now even though the tools are “rated” at twice the power they normally don’t draw near that and only trip the breaker when they get bogged down in a deep concrete bore or something of that sort. Thanks – not the most portable solution that I was looking for but nonetheless – a solution.

We’re building a house and at the point of picking out appliances I thought I wanted to go with all energy-star appliances save money and energy in the long after going back and forth looking at the specs on two comparable GE refrigerators – one energy-star, the other not energy star, the savings per year appears to be a whopping $3. As the energy star fridge is $200. more than the regular it would take 66 years to absorb that cost. Also, is it just me or is $3 of energy savings really going to be …any?

The math is based on what the two GE machines say on their spec pages, this seems like a huge waste of my money…where is the savings? what am I missing or is this just a bunch of hype.

Most power plants in the US and all over the world are using coal to operate and generate electricity. Fossil fuel has been used as an energy source as long as man has learned to generate power. Coal has been around for centuries and when man started using this energy sources no one though about the consequences. mineral fuels will run out and there will be a shortage of it in near future. This shortage in fossil fuel will have its affect on our daily live and various industries. Today we see some of these affects already, fossil fuel prices are raising and generated energy is becoming more expensive. Although mineral fuels are more scares, to need for fossil fuels will still be here and will not decrease in near future. To solve this shortage of mineral fuels we will need to look for other possibilities for our energy demand.

Fortunately, green energy sources are growing in interest. For instance, locations with large rivers are experimenting on building a hydro-electric power plant, which turns out to be beneficial. Other locations with strong wind speed make use of a wind generator that can convert wind power into electricity. Also thermal and tidal powers are good alternatives.

Energy from the sun is also one of the alternative energy sources that is gaining in interest. green energy has steadily been growing. Today energy from the sun is widely used in the US and the advantages are tremendous. Our green energy source, the sun, its life span is estimated to be another 4.5 billion years. It is fair to say that this energy source is almost endless.

Rate of Energy from the Sun

The sun’s radiation reaches a certain unit of area in space in the region of the Earth’s orbit and is estimated to be at 1,400 watts per square meter. Out of this, photovoltaic cells can capture 19 to 56 watts per square meter (for 15% efficiency) or an equivalent of 0.45 to 1.35 kilowatt per hour (kWh) in an average day and night average.

Therefore, if there would be larger area that will be covered by more solar panels, these panels can produce a little more energy in the form of electricity than what is currently available from our imported sources of energy combined (assuming 8% solar cell efficiency).

Convert Solar Energy

There are two ways of conversion of solar energy. First is the direct sunlight which involves only one conversion into a usable form. For instance:

•    Sunlight hits the solar cell, converting it into electricity.
•    Sunlight hits the absorber surface of a solar thermal collector, converting into thermal energy which can be used to heat homes during cold season.

The second is the indirect solar energy  which involves more than one conversion to reach a usable form. For instance:

•    Plants use photosynthesis to transform solar energy to chemical energy, which can be burned later as fuel to generate electricity (also known as bio-fuel technology).
•    Hydroelectric dams and wind turbines are indirectly supplied by solar energy through its interaction with the Earth’s atmosphere.

What is Good and Not Good About Solar Energy

Just like any other types of energy resources, solar energy has its ins and outs.

What’s Good:

•    Pollution-free.
•    Solar facilities can be run with little extra input or maintenance.
•    It is abundant. As mentioned earlier, almost all inhabited areas here on Earth can be reached by the sun’s rays.

Cons:

•    Although it is everywhere, non-tropical locations can receive little sunlight. Thus, energy that will be produced in these locations is a minimum.
•    Only during daylight hours thus not available after dark.
•    Photovoltaic cell technologies generate direct current (DC) power which needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) power used in distribution grids.

Once extensive development of the use of the sun’s rays is materialized, expect that every household or business in the world will now be powered by solar energy. It is not just a dream, it will be a dream come true.

Start making your effort to reduce your carbon footprint and save money at the same time. If you’re shopping for a new dishwasher, cooker, fridge freezer or oven, always look for the Energy Saving Recommended logo. They will cost less to run and help reduce carbon emissions.

Refrigeration – Side by side fridge freezers use more energy than similarly sized models with the freezer on top, even if they both carry the ENERGY STAR on board. The government holds the two categories to different standards, allowing side-by-sides to use 10-30% more energy. Icemakers and through-the-door ice also add to energy consumption.

In cooking, when it comes to choosing the fuel type, gas is usually preferable to electricity as a heating fuel. But because cooking doesn’t make a huge overall impact on your energy bill, this choice has more to do with your own preference. Many people find that gas offers better cooking control; however, it also introduces combustion products into the house that must be vented to the outside. Be sure to purchase an energy-efficient range hood that vents cooking products up from the cooktop and directly outside (avoid down-draft vents).

The EU Energy Rating measures energy efficiency on a seven point scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The rating covers a variety of household appliances including fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers, washing machines, electric tumble driers, combined washer-driers, lamps, electric ovens and air conditioners. By law, all retailers in the EU must display an energy efficiency rating on these products. A product with an A rating will have passed a rigorous, impartial testing procedure, so you can be sure of its high energy efficiency.

If everyone in the UK upgraded their old refrigeration appliance to an A-rated, energy efficient product, energy wastage would be cut by over two-thirds. Buying an energy efficient fridge freezer to replace your inefficient model could cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 296 kilos a year.

Also, why not consider applying for a grant, availble to many people throughout the UK. The UK Government funds schemes providing up to £2,700 to households on certain benefits (see below for examples of eligibility criteria) to improve their heating and energy efficiency. In England the scheme is known as Warm Front, in Northern Ireland it is Warm Homes, in Scotland it is Warm Deal and the Central Heating Programme and in Wales it is the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme. The eligibility criteria for the schemes differ between countries – with some schemes you need to be in receipt of certain benefits, whilst others are available to anyone over a certain age.
