There are a variety of tire shredders that are used in the reprocessing and disposal of tires. These machines cut tires into small pieces so they can be reprocessed and used in making other products. The demand for the machines has grown as the need for an alternative to placing tires in piles or in landfills has risen.
Many governments, local and otherwise, have forbidden the disposal of tires in stockpiles and landfills. Tires in stockpiles create a perfect environment for rodents and mosquitoes to breed. Those creatures can carry many diseases that can be passed to animals and humans. In landfills, rubber tires can rise to the surface cover and damage it. Tires are also present a risk of fire.
Some of the uses for recycled tires include landscaping mulches, an additive for paving material, and stadium flooring. It is also ideal for playgrounds when shredded small enough. Another use is for fuel in kilns used in concrete, pulp, and steel factories. The minimum size for this type of use is two inches.
There are some shredders that can remove the steel from the tires before they are shredded but most do not. This is a necessity for most recycling uses of the rubber. Without the removal of the metal, the recycled tires are basically unmarketable. As an added note, there are machines available that are made to shred many different types of products, such as cardboard. A machine of that type is not suitable for tires since they tend to tear the rubber apart and expose the steel.
Mobile machines are portable and can be taken to the customer and shred on site. These are compact and cannot handle a high volume of tires at one time. They are powered by gasoline engines or by generators, depending on the model being used.
Fixed machines are generally set up at plants or at processing facilities. Some of these machines can process up to 2500 tires per hour. The smallest pieces that can be obtained from one machine is two inches. Shear shredders are the most popular machines being used. They have a slow speed, a low torque, and two shafts of knives making them very efficient.
Most of these machines have a built in safety feature to stop to stop it in the even a preset maximum weight load is exceeded. This is to prevent to many tires going through it at one time and damaging the blades, and to stop it automatically in the event an object that is not meant to be shredded falls into it. The machines are also equipped with manual shut down buttons.
Tire shredders require little maintenance other than the knives used for cutting the rubber. Some types can be removed and re-sharpened while others must be replaced. It is very expensive and time consuming to replace the cutting blades. These machines cost anywhere from one hundred thousand for a basic model up to several hundred thousand dollars for the industrial shredders.
